The Spitzenkandidaten process has been one of the major democratic developments in EU politics, enabling EU citizens to have an indirect vote for the EU Commission President via their votes for the European Parliament election. Now this democratic development is in danger as the European Council, urged by the German Chancellor Angela Merkel, has made a move to abolish the Spitzenkandidaten process and therefore end the influence of EU citizens on the choice of the EU Commission President.

JEF Germany has taken action against this and started a petition, supported by all German Political Youth parties, in order to urge Merkel to maintain the Spitzenkandidaten process!
