European Movement International


Monday 2 November

The US Elections and the impact on EU-US Relations 
Just hours before Americans head to the polls to elect the next President of the United States, the European Movement International will hold an online panel to discuss recent developments in American politics, economy, society and democracy, and the impact of the 2020 US Presidential Election on future of transatlantic relations. The event will feature experts and analysts of US politics: Matthew MacWilliams (Scholar of American politics and political culture & author of On Fascism: 12 Lessons from American History), and Tara Palmeri (Journalist and commentator, ex-ABC News’ White House correspondent, Politico White House correspondent & CNN Political Analyst). European Parliament


Wednesday 4 – Thursday 5 November

EuroLat Plenary
MEPs and their Latin American counterparts will gather, via video conference, for the 13th EuroLat Plenary Session, and will chiefly discuss the pandemic. Parliamentarians will assess the human impact of COVID-19 on both sides of the Atlantic and will also consider how to promote social and economic recovery. High Representative Josep Borrell will deliver a video message to the assembly. German Minister Heiko Maas, on behalf of the Presidency of the Council, and the new President of the Inter-American Development Bank Mauricio Claver-Carone are also expected to participate.

Monday 2 November

Competitiveness Council
The joint meeting of the EU Council responsible for space (Competitiveness Council) and the Council of the European Space Agency (ESA) at ministerial level formulates guidelines for European space policy. More information on this meeting can be found here.

Tuesday 3 November

Eurogroup
On the agenda are, among other things, the Covid-19 economic outlook and challenges in the euro area and global economy; Exchange of views with the Chair of the European Parliament’s Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee; Strategic discussion on the euro as a digital currency; and reporting on Banking Union operational aspects.

Informal meeting of Consumer Protection Ministers
During this meeting the ministers will discuss the new multiannual consumer agenda that the Commission will present in the fourth quarter. The focus should be on the topic of “digital transformation” against the background of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Wednesday 4 November

Economic and Finance Ministers meeting
Ministers will discuss, among other things: the Council conclusions on the Commission’s action plan on preventing money laundering and terrorism financing; Council conclusions on EU statistics, looking into the statistical needs for EU economic governance and decision-making; the European Fiscal Board’s 2020 annual report, as presented by Niels Thygesen.

Tuesday 3 November

EU platform on animal welfare
One of the key priorities of the Commission is to promote an enhanced dialogue on animal welfare issues that are relevant at EU level among competent authorities, businesses, civil society and scientists. To achieve these priorities the Platform will assist the Commission with the development and exchange of coordinated actions on animal welfare. More information can be found here.

Commissioner Olivér Várhelyi, on Neighbourhood and Enlargement, meets President of the Council of Europe’s European Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission), Gianni Buquicchio.

Commissioner on Cohesion and Reforms, Elisa Ferreira, holds a videoconference call with Vice-Prime Minister of Slovak Republic, Veronika Remišová.

Johansson speaks with Spanish Minister of the Interior
Commissioner Ylva Johansson on Home Affairs participates in a joint mission to Gran Canaria with Fernando Grande-Marlaska, Spanish Minister of the Interior.

ECO section meeting
On the agenda are, among other things, a discussion on the working document on Package for Fair and Simple Taxation.

Thursday 5 November

Communication Commission meeting
On the agenda are, among other things, the appointment of the members of the cultural sub-committee, the state of play concerning the Civil Solidarity prize 2020, and an exchange of views on the subject of the civil society media seminar.

Thursday 5 November

Working group on Western Balkans
On the agenda are, among other things, an update on EU-Kosovo relations and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the municipalities of Kosovo.

Digital Masterclass
The 10th edition of the Digital Masterclasses series will take place. Charlélie Jourdan, creative strategist, digital communications consultant and trainer, will provide practical guidance on how to develop creative messages and communication strategies from a local and regional perspective on the different areas of the EU Green Deal. German Presidency


Wednesday 4 November – Thursday 5 November

EU market surveillance conference 
This conference, under the German Council Presidency, is jointly organised by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, and the European Commission. It will discuss how market surveillance will become more digital, cooperative and resilient. More information on this event can be found here.

Tuesday 3 November

French-German Forum on Energy
In cooperation with the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the German Ministry of Economy and Energy and the French embassy in Berlin, the French-German Office for Energy Transition is organising the third edition of the French-German Forum on energy. The roundtable will include policy makers and representatives from industry, commerce, science and civil society. It will focus on the implementation of the Green Deal, the challenges the pandemic has caused and the green recovery. The Forum will also focus on cross-border cooperation between France, Germany and Poland in terms of energy transition. More information can be found here.
