EMI responds to European Commission consultation on the 2012 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20)

The European Movement International (EMI) has responded to the consultation on the planned European Commission Communication for the 2012 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20).

The European Commission will publish, towards the middle of 2011, a Communication setting out its views on objectives and possible concrete deliverables for Rio+20, as a basis for further dialogue with the EU institutions, civil society and other interested actors, including third countries.

To provide initial views from stakeholders, the Commission asked citizens, organisations and public authorities to now contribute to a public consultation. You can download the response of the EMI hereafter:

The aim of the Rio+20 Summit ("UNCSD") will be to secure renewed political commitment for sustainable development, by assessing progress to date, identifying remaining gaps in the implementation of past commitments and addressing new and emerging challenges. It has to be seen in the context of related previous UN summits, in Stockholm (1972), Rio de Janeiro (1992) or Johannesburg (2002) and will focus on two major, intertwined themes: "a green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication" and "the institutional framework for sustainable development".

The European Union has a strong interest in both UNCSD themes. As part of its key 2020 objectives, the EU aims to move towards a sustainable, resource-efficient and low-carbon economy. The Rio+20 Summit will offer an opportunity to pursue this objective at global level and can serve as a platform to move forward the EU’s long-standing agenda to improve global governance.
