EM International: Statement on the passing of Valéry Giscard d’Estaing

The European Movement International Board and members share the grief felt by the French people and many Europeans over the death of former President of the French Republic Valéry Giscard d’Estaing.

Born in Coblence, Germany, and soldier during World War 2, Valery Giscard d’Esxtaing was a fervent European, deeply involved in the construction of the European project.

As French President, he was at the origin of the creation of the European Council, the direct election of the Members of the European Parliament, and the set up of the European Monetary System.

He was also Member of the European Parliament, President of the European Movement International between 1989 and 1997, and served as President of the Convention for the Future of Europe.

Striving for the values and common objectives that shaped the European Union, in particular the spirit of reconciliation between European countries, his devotion to our common project was exemplary and of extraordinary importance.

We wish to express the sincerest condolences to his wife and family.
