The European Movement Albania (EMA) recently analysed and reported on the democratic development in Albania. The analyses is part of the study “Nations in Transit 2010”, released by the nongovernmental organisation Freedom House, advocating democratic change and human rights. The report – covering events of 2009 – is a comparative study of the democratic development in 29 countries from Central Europe to Eurasia.
The EMA report underlines that contrary to some Western Balkan countries, which were able to improve their democracy score, Albania lost index points in some several categories. Analysts of the EMA say that this is above all due to the lower score in the fields of National Democratic Governance, Local Democratic Governance and Independent Media.
The 2010 Nations in Transit report generally observes a worrying regional trend with more than half of the 29 countries backsliding in democratic reforms, or continuing on a dangerous trajectory towards authoritarian governance.
