EM Italy – Discussions and festivities on Europe day in Italy

On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Schuman declaration, the Italian European Movement, AICCRE and ANP have organised a competition between secondary school students on the theme of Europe and the Schuman declaration. They will compete to write the most eloquent and inspirational solemn declaration in the like of Schuman’s whilst also referring to the challenges that Europe is facing today.

They will then be participating to a political debate on the same themes in Rome, 11 May organized together with GFE Roma and Europe Direct Roma. In this contest a special ceremony will be held to award the prize for the most engaging and convincing “new Declarations”.

The EM Italy together with Europe Direct Roma will hold several information stalls in Università degli studi Roma TRE and Università degli Studi Roma “La Sapienza”. Students will find a great variety of information on Europe and the Schuman declaration there and it will also be the opportunity for them to discuss with politicians and EU experts about Europe, what it does and what it should be doing in the future.

CIME supports also other public initiatives in Forli and in Bologna and the GFE/JEF Italy 9 of May campaign for a “Resolution on the occasion of the sixtieth anniversary of the Schuman Declaration (May 5th, 1950)”.
This year, JEF Italy are strongly focusing their awareness campaign towards a federal Europe that Robert Schuman called for in 1950. In the current economic and financial environment, the political meaning of the federalizing process, as entrenched in the declaration, has become all the more important and should be given a much larger resonance in the public debate.
JEF is therefore asking to each Representatives of local authorities to lead the local event by approving the same Resolution (available in English, French, German and Italian). Even single citizens can send it to their local authorities. Through the Resolution, local administrations will spread the political meaning of the Schuman Declaration; they will also display a fair number of blue European flags on the Town Hall during the week preceding May 9th, 2010.
For further information on this campaign, you can visit JEF Italy’s website.

But let’s not forget that Europe day is first and foremost a celebration! All of the entertainment and festivities will promise the day to be a full-out Eurobash in the Italian capital city. Along with the presence of EU institutions and organisations, the famous Piazza Navona will be the scene of various music performances. Come and find out more!
