EM UK – 60 years of Europe: What has Europe ever done for the British people?

On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, the European Movement UK and the Young European Movement will be celebrating Europe day, organising three conferences in Bristol, Leeds and London. In each city, various professors and EU experts will be discussing the different facets of the benefits of Europe for British citizens: whilst the main focus of the discussion in Bristol will be on the European labour market and job opportunities for young graduates, Leeds Central Library will be hosting a conference on student mobility in Europe. The conference at Regent’s College in London will put forward the strong political meaning of the UK membership to the Union, and its benefits for both the UK and the EU.

On Europe Day, 9th May 2010, the European Movement together with European Alternatives is organising a Forum on Europe and Democracy, as part of Transeuropa Festival which will be held in London from 25th April to 9th May.
The Forum will open with a lecture by renowned American sociologist Saskia Sassen on London’s status as a global city and the implications for rethinking the meaning of democracy in a global age.
This will be followed by two round tables during which representatives from several NGOs, think tanks and civil society organisations will discuss about democratic participation in Europe and look at the different options for citizens and social movements to engage in European decision-making.

Londoners and visitors will be welcome to join the picnic organized by the EMiL in Regent’s Park. The meeting point will be at York Gate, 12pm.

In Devon, the local branch of the European Movement will be present at the hoisting of the EU flag at Devon county hall, Exeter, on 7th May. They will also be present at the hoisting of the European flag at Exeter Guildhall on Saturday 8th May at 10.00
