ECC Regional Debate in Copenhagen – Climate Change

European Citizens’ Consultations
Regional Debate on Climate Change
Copenhagen, 28th September

On the 28th of September 2009, Stakeholder from Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania will meet in Copenhagen, to discuss a broad range of issues, related to climate change.

Climate change is a highly debated issue in the current International discussions. Developments in the world since 1997, when the Kyoto Protocol was negotiated, show the importance of new agreements.

In December, the “United Nations Climate Change Conference” will take place in Copenhagen. The Danish government` s ambition is that the COP15 conference will result in an agreement, including all countries of the world.

However, what is the challenge of Europe in this important issue?

The European Citizens Consultation tried to convene the will of the European Citizens. Citizens from all over Europe were brought together to formulate recommendations for the future of Europe. After this first phase of the project, five regional debates are aiming to go deeper into the discussed topics. The first regional debate in September will bring together experts, stakeholders, representatives of the European institutions and newly elected MEP`s with different social, professional backgrounds to share their experience, feelings and visions on this issue. The focus of more than 100 participants will be on solutions that could be realised at European level.

The debate will be held during one day, having in the first part of the day identification of problems, with questions and answers by experts, and in the second part two panel discussions.

The panel discussions will deal with the role of industry and civil society by reaching the climate change objectives of the EU and the role of the EU and its member states as leader in order to tackle climate change.
