Communiqué regarding Professor Geremek
AEDE was painfully stunned when we heard of the sudden death of Bronislaw GEREMEK.
A great pedagogue, he wasn’t simply content to be one of the recognized masters of the College of Europe in Bruges or of its extension in Natolin, Poland; he travelled up and down Europe and succeeded in making young people enthusiastic about a strong and peaceful European construction. He is a light and a model for us all.
He took part in all struggles to construct our Europe; he represents for us the spirit of resistance.
After Nazi persecutions, he represented the resistance against Stalinist communism. In the eighties, when everybody chose to carry the colours of Solidarność, Bronisław Geremek was a symbol for those of us who hoped for European conciliation and for ending the scandal of the “iron curtain” that separated us for such a long time.
Very recently, his resistance to populism (right wing or left wing) and his determined efforts to strengthen political Europe have given hope to all European militants. He was one of the fathers of a reconciled and reunited Europe. He was a giant!
