European Council
EU leaders will meet for a two-day European Council in Brussels. The topics discussed will include the current epidemiological and vaccine situation and views on lessons learned regarding vaccination strategies; digital transformation and the importance of digital connectivity and global partnerships; energy prices and measures that can be taken on both national and European level to address the impacts of this price increase; migration and the implementation of the European Council’s conclusions of June 2021; a strategic discussion on EU trade policy as well as a discussion on external relations.

Monday 18 October
Foreign Affairs Council
Foreign Affair ministers are expected to discuss how to further engage with countries in the Gulf economically and in the pursuit of the EU global agenda. Also, they will discuss EU relations with the Eastern Partnership. The Council is due to approve conclusions on Bosnia and Herzegovina/Operation EUFOR Althea.

General Affairs Council
The Council will exchange views on the draft conclusions of the European Council on 21 and 22 October 2021. Ministers will also discuss the annual rule of law dialogue. The Slovenian presidency will inform ministers about the latest developments regarding the Conference on the Future of Europe.
Wednesday 20 October
Tripartite Social Summit video conference
The main theme of this Summit will be “Transforming Europe’s recovery into long-term sustainable growth supporting more and better jobs” focusing on Recovery and Resilience plans, climate, digital transition, and sustainable work.

EUSO stakeholders forum
This event will reflect the challenges facing soil within the various strategies of the EU Green Deal and Horizon Europe’s proposed mission on soil health and food. In addition to a high-level panel on recent soil-related policy developments, the meeting will establish a series of dedicated working groups to address burning scientific and policy questions (e.g. soil monitoring, citizen engagement and increased soil literacy, soil pollution, erosion and biodiversity). Participants will be encouraged to engage in discussions and possibly to contribute to these working groups.

Event on Sustainable Tourism – The Business for Europe’s Mountains
This conference is aiming at understanding the common challenges and opportunities at grassroots level of tourism business in mountain areas. The event is bringing up the tourism development facet of EC’s Recovery and Resilience Facility and its eventual impact at local level of small mountain towns (with small hospitality businesses, pastoral communities, mountain farmers and other local and regional stakeholders) on one hand, and the consumers (mountaineers), on the other.

This webinar will present the latest developments on monitoring our seas in order to stimulate investment and partnerships between public institutions and private companies. Increased deployment of these services can have a real impact on the blue economy.

October Days 2021 – Rethinking cities: from smart to human
The 7th edition of the October Days for Sustainable Development will take the opportunity to draw lessons from the present crisis and provide possible outlook scenarios, acknowledging that nothing is set in stone – that the paths are for us to choose – but also acknowledging that there will not and cannot be a “return to normal” as we know it. Key actors from the global and local community will discuss the issues at stake, showcasing practical and scientific evidence and the latest findings arising since the outbreak of the pandemic.
