Rule of Law in the EU: How is the European Commission addressing challenges in Hungary and Poland?
On Tuesday 1 February, from 11:00 to 12:00 CET, the European Movement Belgium and the European Movement International will hold an online discussion featuring Didier Reynders, European Commissioner for Justice, entitled “Rule of Law in the EU: How is the European Commission addressing challenges in Hungary and Poland?” Ever since the initiation of the European project, the rule of law has formed a cornerstone of the European construction and is one of the founding principles of our Union. On several occasions, however, Member State governments have undermined and continue to undermine the rule of law in their own jurisdictions. The guest Didier Reynders, European Commissioner for Justice will join to discuss the European Commission’s framework built to maintain the coherence and consistency of democracy, and guarantee unity at a time when the European Union is confronted with breaches of the rule of law from within.

High-level Conference on Afghan Women
This event will gather MEPs, prominent Afghan women who were finalists for Parliament’s 2021 Sakharov Prize, Commission and United Nations representatives as well as representatives of other international organisations, to address and cast light on the extremely worrying situation for women in Afghanistan following the Taliban’s return to power last year.

The informal meeting of industry and internal market ministers will focus on the issues of strategic autonomy and decarbonising industry.

Thursday 3- Friday 4 February

Informal meeting of justice and home affairs ministers
The informal meeting of ministers responsible for home affairs will address crisis management in Europe; radicalisation; and the lessons learned from recent events in Afghanistan and in Belarus concerning border and migration management. The informal meeting of ministers responsible for justice will cover the fight against hatred, with a meeting with digital technology companies notably planned; child abduction alert systems; and recognition between Member States of parentage established within the European Union.
