The European Green Deal and its impact on the EU-Turkey relations
On Tuesday, 10 May from 14:00-15:00 CET, the European Movement International in partnership with the European Movement Turkey will hold an online panel discussion entitled The European Green Deal and its impact on the EU-Turkey relations.
This panel discussion will offer a unique opportunity to promote dialogue and information exchange between high-level institution representatives both from the EU and from Turkey, on the implementation of the EU Green Deal and its impact on the EU’s neighbourhood, in particular Turkey. We are interested in tackling the financial and diplomatic aspects related to the Deal from different perspectives.

Brussels VI Conference: Supporting the future of Syria and the region
The sixth Brussels Conference on Supporting the future of Syria and the region takes place on 9-10 May. The conference is the main pledging event for Syria and the region in 2022. The pledges will take place during the Ministerial Conference, on 10 May, at the Council building in Brussels. The event’s overarching objective is to continue supporting the Syrian people in Syria and the region, and mobilise the international community in support of a comprehensive and credible political solution to the Syria conflict.

Commissioners will gather for the College meeting on Wednesday. Two packages will be presented, the Financial package and Child rights package. The financial package will include the Debt Equity Bias Reduction Allowance (DEBRA) and a review of EU rules on Distance Marketing of Consumer Financial Services. The Child rights package will include a European strategy for a better internet for children and legislation to effectively tackle child sexual abuse.

The sustainable economy we need for Europe’s resilience and a European Green and Social Deal
The European Economic and Social Committee and the French Presidency of the Council of the EU will host a conference, bringing together EU policy makers to lay the groundwork for discussing a new policy framework for a sustainable economy for the wellbeing of society as driver for Europe’s resilience and strategic autonomy, focusing on systemic change.
European Day of the Liberal Professions 2022
The Liberal Professions Category (of the EESC) will host the 6th Edition of the European Day of the Liberal Professions entitled Liberal Professions: Lessons Learned and Challenges Ahead, which will focus on positive and negative impacts following the COVID-19 crisis. The different panels will address crucial topics, from digitalisation to education and sustainable development. Several speakers will participate, looking into the challenges and opportunities that these turbulent times offer for the future of the Liberal Professions.

Future of Europe: recommendations and follow-up. What role for the EESC?
The Conference on the Future of Europe, finishing on the 9th of May, has brought together various interests and citizens from all across Europe, and produced important insights and recommendations particularly from Citizens, on the kind of Europe that they want. The focus of this meeting is to follow up on those recommendations emerged from the Conference, having an interactive debate with various speakers and our members, as well as an open discussion on the next steps to make sure the recommendations are followed through. European Movement International Secretary General, Petros Fassoulas, will take part in the event.

Towards a Europeanisation of migration policy?
The meeting of the EESC’s Section for External Relations is dedicated to Migration, with a conference being organised in the context of its work on the Commission’s Communication Responding to state-sponsored instrumentalisation of migrants at the EU external border (JOIN (2021) 32 final). The Communication responds to the situation that arose in 2021 on the border between Belarus and the EU, but the opinion will also consider the war in Ukraine and its consequences. This conference aims to discuss these issues and the possible solutions we can develop at European level. The event includes an opening session and the following panels: one on the The migration question and how it now affects all EU borders and another on The geopolitical impact of the new EU Pact on Migration and Asylum Policies.

Dialogue on youth participation in democratic debate
On the occasion of the closing of the Conference on the Future of Europe on 9 May in Strasbourg, the European Committee of the Regions will organise a debate on youth participation in democratic life. This local dialogue will give the floor to young people, representatives of associations and local and regional elected politicians, with the objective to promote youth engagement and participation in democratic life and elections.

The CoR and INTERACT are hosting a conference on cross-border tourism that will tackle the following topics: the impact of the current geopolitical situation on cross-border tourism; EGTCs as innovative actors in cross-border tourism; Innovative cross-border cooperation models supported by INTERREG.
UNFCCC COP27 – Joint ENVE-CIVEX Stakeholder consultation
The European Committee of the Regions (CoR) is preparing two opinions on the upcoming COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh (Egypt). The adoption of both opinions is foreseen for the CoR Plenary Session of 12-13 October 2022. To this purpose, the CoR is organising a Stakeholder Consultation on COP27 where all relevant stakeholders will be invited to put forward their views on the role of multilevel governance in the implementation of the Glasgow Climate Pact and the objectives of EU regions and cities for COP27.

CoR Multi-Level Dialogue on Just Transition
The Multilevel Dialogue on Just Transition is being hosted by the European Committee of the Regions in cooperation with the European Commission. The aim of the Dialogue is to promote exchange between the different levels of governance in the process of just transition throughout Europe. The European Union has to make the most out of the Just Transition Fund, and the participation of cities and regions is of key importance to its success.

European Economic Governance: A new rulebook?
The European Commission relaunched its public consultation on the subject of EU economic governance in October 2021. In this context, the High Council of Public Finance and its European counterparts are holding a conference on the reform of European economic governance. Discussions will be carried out between European authorities, independent fiscal institutions, economists and all civil-society stakeholders.

Conference: “Europe as a Leader in Disruptive Innovation”
Disruptive innovation is a priority at national and European level, which is notably reflected in the recent creation of the European Innovation Council (EIC). This conference will combine, for the first time, two key events: Paris-Saclay SPRING, a highlight for innovation in France, and the Week of Innovative Regions in Europe (WIRE), which is held each year in one of the countries holding the presidency, with significant involvement of the regions. The conference will focus on disruptive innovation’s contributions to the recovery and European technological sovereignty and address the implementation of various European and national instruments at the regional and territorial level. It will also present the priority areas and opportunities for the European ecosystem, combining round tables and demonstrations by stakeholders in disruptive innovation.

Online EU Charter seminar for Croatian ministries
FRA experts will discuss the relevance and role of the Charter at EU and national level. They will also present the Agency’s work in the context of the new Charter conditionality that applies to EU funding. In addition, FRA will give an overview of its Charter resources including the Charter handbook and the Charter e-learning.
European Police Congress
The European Policy Congress this year will focus on whether change poses a risk or a chance. It will look at Europe, society, climate and technology. FRA will take part in a panel on artificial intelligence in policing.

Human rights education for legal professionals on child-friendly justice
As in the initial course, FRA will provide input based on its work on child-friendly justice. New findings from its research into procedural safeguards for children in criminal proceedings will feed into the update. It will also draw on the widely used and recently updated handbook on European child rights case law. FRA also continues to contribute to making judicial proceedings more child-friendly as project partner in the new Norway Grant project with the Romanian prosecutor’s office. The project looks to strengthen the protection and assistance mechanisms for victims of crime with a focus on victims of hate crime and children as victims of crime.

Helga Pedersen Moot Court Competition
The final round of the tenth edition of the European Human Rights Moot Court Competition, in English language, on the European Convention on Human Rights, will take place at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). 19 university teams from 13 countries have been selected following the written round of the competition.

Cybercrime conference
The additional protocol to the Convention on Cybercrime (“Budapest Convention”), intended to enhance co-operation and disclosure of electronic evidence, will be opened for signature at an international conference under the Italian Presidency of the Committee of Ministers. The Protocol responds to this challenge and provides tools such as direct co-operation with service providers and registrars, effective means to obtain subscriber information and traffic data, immediate co-operation in emergencies or joint investigations – that are subject to a system of human rights and rule of law, including data protection safeguards. The Italian Minister of Justice, Marta Cartabia, and the Council of Europe Secretary General, Marija Pejčinović Burić, will open the conference which will bring together representatives of governments, the police, the internet industry, the civil society and academia.
