European Movement International adopts new political resolutions and Work Plan
At its Federal Assembly 2015, which took place on Friday 24 April and Saturday 25 April, the European Movement International adopted a series of new political resolutions. A resolution to recognise the Armenian Genocide was passed by unanimity following fierce discussions, and other votes were held on topics including the Freedom of Movement and the Eastern Partnership.
Discussions on the different topics took part in working groups – with members encouraged to work in a more participative style.
Following a special event dedicated to the Final Helsinki Act, held at the Saeima, Parliament of the Republic of Latvia, members agreed on a resolution in support of the Helsinki+40 Process. The Helsinki Final Act, which founded today’s Organisation for Security and Co-Operation in Europe, commits the organisation to similar core values as the European Movement, namely the promotion of democracy, the rule of law and respect for human rights, as well as conflict prevention and conflict management in order to achieve sustainable security on the European Continent.
Members who met as part of the EMI Political Committee on More democracy, citizens’ rights and freedom discussed a resolution on the Free Movement of peoples and took the position that this fundamental right should not be impinged by future EU-level policy developments but rather that a balance should be found between security measures and collaboration in this area.
Climate Change and the post-2015 agenda were discussed by members of the EMI Political Committee on Jobs, Competitiveness and Sustainable Growth. With important summits planned to take place this year, members outlined ambitious goals that the main international institutions should stick to in order to develop a new blueprint that will offer the opportunity to end poverty, reduce inequality and avert the destructive effects of a global temperature rise.
Taking into account new developments and anticipating the upcoming review of the European Neighbourhood policy, members of the EMI Political Committee Europe in the World met to discuss both the ENP and the Eastern Partnership. Members agreed to write a contribution to the consultations on the European Neighbourhood and agreed on several proposals that will be key to the success of both initiatives.
The different resolutions can be viewed here:

Members also voted to update the organisation’s Work Plan for 2016, which can be found here.
