Convention before the European elections in 2014

EMI President Jo Leinen welcomes Mr. Schäuble’s proposals

We need to think beyond the crisis. In order to achieve a full-fledged fiscal and economic union for the euro area treaty changes will be inevitable.

In this respect, Mr. Schäuble’s proposals to convene a new Convention can only be welcomed,” said Jo LEINEN, President of the European Movement International (EMI).

The reforms should not be discussed behind closed doors, but have to be elaborated in a truly European debate,” LEINEN demanded.

Therefore we need to call in a Convention with the participation of all parliaments, the European Commission and the governments of the Member States to discuss the necessary reforms,” LEINEN continued.

I hope Mr. Schäuble’s proposal to start a Convention can be decided upon at the December European Council summit and serve to kick-off the process of consultation and deliberation about the future of the European Union before the 2014 European elections,” LEINEN said.
