European Council President Van Rompuy calls for reform process in the EU

At a meeting in Brussels, Herman van Rompuy, President of the European Council and Jo Leinen, President of the European Movement International (EMI) discussed next steps for the future of the EU. President van Rompuy called for a thorough reform process in the European Union that will take time, but will be necessary in order to make the EU fit for the challenges ahead.

The debate on the future of the Eurozone has already started. Herman van Rompuy argued that an even broader debate on the future of the EU will be necessary in the coming months and years. An extensive participation of civil society will be welcomed.

President van Rompuy expressed great interest for EMI activities and was particularly impressed by the EMI’s cooperation with civil society in the EU’s Eastern and Southern Neighbourhood. Herman van Rompuy and Jo Leinen agreed to continue the cooperation between EMI and the European Council.
