Prime Minister appointed in Romania, ALDE Party now numbers 8 EU Prime Ministers

With the appointment this morning of Sorin Cimpeanu as the new interim Prime Minister in Romania, the ALDE European liberal family continues its growth in strength across Europe and now numbers eight Prime Ministers in the European Union.

The Socialist government in Romania led by Victor Ponta resigned earlier this week in the wake of mass protests and Romanian President Klaus Iohannis this morning appointed Minister of Education Sorin Cimpeanu as the country’s interim Prime Minister.Mr Cimpeanu is member of the Romanian Alliance of Liberals and Democrats, which is co-led by long-standing Liberal Călin Popescu-Tăriceanu and is due to become a member of the ALDE Party at the upcoming Congress in Budapest on 19-21 November.

Mr Cimpeanu joins Xavier Bettel (Luxembourg, current holder of the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union), Dr Miro Cerar (Slovenia), Charles Michel (Belgium), Lars Løkke Rasmussen (Denmark), Taavi Rõivas (Estonia), Mark Rutte (Netherlands, next holder of the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union) and Juha Sipilä (Finland) as sitting ALDE Party Prime Ministers.
