Building on the Conference on the Future of Europe: The Way Forward

On Tuesday, 5 July 2022, from 10:00-11:30 CEST, the European Movement International held an online panel discussion entitled Building on the Conference on the Future of Europe: The Way Forward.

Now that the Conference on the Future of Europe has come to and end, the institutions have begun to provide a follow-up to the citizens’ proposals. Key demands such as the end of the unanimity in the Council, electoral reforms or the European Defence Union are being extensively debated, amongst a great number of other ambitious ideas from the citizens.

This panel discussion provided an opportunity to discuss the results and future expectations of the Conference as well as the current discussion on the implementation of this initiative, by taking into account both the demands of those citizens who take part in the Conference and the role that institutions, national parliaments, civil society and social partners will play in the follow-up process.

The panel featured:

  • Valentina Balzani, Member of the Citizens’ Panels, Plenary Member of the Conference on the Future of Europe;
  • Annemie de Clerck, Member of the Citizens’ Panels, Plenary Member of the Conference on the Future of Europe;
  • Laurence Farreng, Member of the European Parliament, Renew Europe (Renew);
  • Cillian Lohan, European Economic and Social Committee Vice-President, Plenary Member of the Conference on the Future of Europe;
  • Noelle O Connell, National Citizen Representative to the Plenary of the Conference on the Future of Europe; Executive Director, European Movement Ireland;
  • Petros Fassoulas, Secretary General, European Movement International (EMI).

The event was live-streamed from the European Movement International’s Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and LinkedIn pages.
