The 2019 European election was the largest democratic election in Europe of all time – the democratic competition in the election campaign and the high level of participation mean that the European Parliament has strong legitimacy for the upcoming legislature. In a recent decision, the EMCDDA board calls for the strengthening of parliamentarianism and the need to stand shoulder to shoulder with the electorate, with all issues relating to the further development of the EU in the foreground. This also applies to the 2020 conference on the future of Europe, and the European Parliament will determine its position on this in mid-January. The European Council decided on the relevant conclusions in December.

As part of EBD Exklusiv we would like to discuss the goals of the European Parliament in a discussion, in an informal setting together with Gabriele Bischoff MEP and representatives of member organizations and institutions from politics and diplomacy. The German dimension of the initiative will also be an important question, especially in the year of the German EU Council Presidency.
