European Movement Migration Event Series – “Tackling the Root Causes of Migration”
The next event in this series takes place in March.
On 2 February 2017 the European Movement International held an event with Neven Mimica, European Commissioner for International Cooperation & Development to discuss mass population movements from the development perspective.
The discussion focused on the question whether EU development tools should prevent or mitigate threats such as civil war, persecution, poverty and climate change which are often the main push factors for mass migration.
The keynote speech by the Commissioner was followed by a panel, featuring Judith Sargentini MEP and Claire Seaward, Humanitarian Campaign and Advocacy Manager, Oxfam International; Ester Asin, Director & EU Representative, Save the Children International.
As part of a broader series of events to discuss the ‘European Responses to Migration’, this launch event aimed to kick off a debate on common European solutions to address irregular or forced migration, to critically assess current European responses and to provide input for further action.
The second event in this series took place on 7 March 2017.
Welcoming words were given by Jo Leinen MEP, President, European Movement International.
The event featured a keynote speech by Neven Mimica, Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development.
