In recent times, there have been increasing concerns, criticism and opposition to the integration process within the European Union. Recent events like the alarming rates of citizens’ unemployment, the refugee crisis and terrorism have led to increased fragmentation, growing nationalistic ideas and pessimism about the European Union. More and more citizens do not fully trust the EU, therefore leading to a de-legitimization of the Union.

ALDA – The European Association for Local Democracy, has initiated this survey to solicit the views of citizens on how to better include them in the decision making process at the European level and to identify the areas in which they perceive that inclusive governance across the European Union and its institutions is less performing.
