Düzen Tekkal is EM Germany’s “Woman of Europe” Award Winner

Since 1991, the European Movement Germany has been honoring women who, through their courageous, creative or persistent voluntary work, are particularly committed to the growing together and consolidation of a united Europe with the “Women’s Europe – Germany Prize”. This year, European Movement Germany is pleased to present Düzen Tekkal with the title of European Woman 2018.

EM Germany’s President Dr. Rainer Wend said on the subject of this year’s award: “Düzen Tekkal is a worthy woman of Europe in 2018. She is doing extraordinary educational work on the lives of the Yezidis in Iraq and is making an important contribution to important European issues: from integration to migration and the protection of minorities – Düzen Tekkal is an exemplary bridge builder.”

As a journalist, author and war correspondent; the native Hanoverian campaigns for values of peace and freedom. Tekkal is also the founder and chairman of humanitarian organisation HAWAR.help, and in March 2018 launched the “Back to Life” project in cooperation with the German Development Agency, which aims to empower women who were victims of IS captivity through craft and literacy programmes.

The award ceremony will take place on May 9 in Berlin. For a full profile and interview of this year’s winner, click here. For a list of previous winners of the “Women of Europe” award, click here.
