European Greens: Black Lives Matter: society must act against racism and discrimination!

Gathered online for the 31st European Green Party Council, Green parties across Europe unanimously adopted a resolution in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

The resolution recalls that “racism is not only a U.S. phenomenon, neither is the fight for justice and equality.” It reasserts demands that have long been part of the Green movement’s fight against racism and discrimination. From support to civil society to a reform of the police, and from preventing discrimination in hiring processes to EU-level action against discrimination, the demands reflect the fact that “fighting racism must not be a matter for those affected, it is the task of the entire society.”

Evelyne Huytebroeck and Thomas Waitz, co-chairs of the European Green Party comment:

“The fight against racism is a fight that requires constant attention, renewed commitments, and new actions. With this resolution, we reassert our commitment to continue working both internally and externally for truly equal rights and treatment for all.

Black people, People of Colour, migrants, Roma people, and other minorities are still experiencing racism on a daily basis. As long as this continues, we will not rest. Eradicating racism is a key component of the path towards resilient societies.”
