European Greens: Croatian Parliamentary elections: Green-left progressive coalition breakthrough
Croatian citizens were called to the voting booths on July 5th to elect their new parliament. The Green-Left coalition – Zeleno–lijeva koalicija including EGP candidate member ORaH – will for the first time ever enter the Croatian parliament, after securing a remarkable seven seats. The coalition did particularly well in Zagreb, where it gained over 20% of the votes.
Thomas Waitz, co-chair of the European Green Party and MEP comments:
“We congratulate the Green-Left coalition for their historic result! This will be a major game-changer in Croatian politics, as the coalition represents civil society, anti-corruption activists, environmentalists, and representatives of the social movement. The result shows clearly that change and a new kind of politics are possible, based on inclusive values, sustainable policies, and citizen participation both in Croatia and the wider Balkan region.
The Green-Left coalition will work hard to ensure that the investments for the recovery from the COVID-19 crisis are made in a way that serves future generations and tackles the climate crisis, poverty, and unemployment in Croatia.”
