European Greens: Welcoming the newly established Green Group in the Committee of the Regions
On 11 February 2020, the Committee of the Regions started its five year mandate and, for the first time ever, a Green Group has been established.
The European Committee of the Regions is a consultative institution of the EU and is known as “the voice of the regions and cities in Europe”. The newly formed group currently consists of nineteen Green members from across Europe.
Evelyne Huytebroeck, co-chair of the European Green Party comments:
“As co-chair of the European Green Party but also as local Councillor and former regional Brussels Minister, I am very happy to accompany the creation of the Green Group in the Committee of the Regions. It shows the Green Wave has a wide impact in scope ranging from a local to European level. We believe the Committee of the Regions is a relevant arena to push forward citizens’ concerns for a greener and fairer society.
Cities and regions will have a crucial role to play in a just transition for all, but it can only happen under two conditions. First, European institutions have the responsibility to listen to cities and regions, as they represent the most active level of citizen participation. Secondly, they should have a space to exchange their good practices. A Green Group in the Committee of the Region will effectively help achieve both goals.”
