European Movement International’s Participation and Proposals to the Conference on the Future of Europe
The Conference on the Future of Europe has provided European citizens with a venue to shape a dialogue with European and national institutions, organised civil society, Social Partners, and local and regional governments to take stock of what the European Union has achieved so far and pave the way for a stronger Europe based on values and democracy.
The innovative process of the Conference on the Future of Europe is coming to an end after one year of fruitful meetings, debates and discussions between national and European institutions as well as with civil society and Social Partners. The European Movement International has actively participated in this much needed democratic exercise, by attending all the plenaries held in Strasbourg and sending recommendations to the nine Working Groups.
Ahead of the launch of the CoFoE, the European Movement put forward a set of detailed proposals for how to make the Conference on the Future of Europe meaningful. We shared these proposals with policy-makers and stakeholders and published them in the press, including on Euractiv, Euractiv France, Euractiv Italy and Euractiv Germany.
We organised various events with citizens and citizens’ representatives as well as key stakeholders from the European Union’s institutions to discuss the process of the Conference as well as the recommendations that were being drafted.
During the 12 months that the Conference on the Future of Europe deliberated, the European Movement took an active part in the Plenaries and the Working Groups, engaging with citizens representatives, national and European Parliamentarians, Social Partners, local and regional representatives and organized civil society at large.
Echoing our policy positions adopted by our member organisations and taking into account the recommendations of the European citizens’ panels, here are our thematic proposals for the Conference on the Future of Europe:
European Democracy, Values and Rights, Rule of Law, Security
European citizens’ recommendations ask for a more active citizen participation in the European democratic process. Echoing that sentiment, we call for the Conference to promote a democratic and participatory Europe based on the respect for the rule of law and the EU’s fundamental values.
