Irish say YES to Fiscal Treaty

“The Irish YES is a vote for fiscal solidarity and stability in Europe. Ireland is well on the road to recovery. The fiscal treaty ratification sends out a strong message for a deeper economic and budgetary cooperation in the Eurozone”, said EMI President Jo Leinen.
“A Monetary Union needs stronger fiscal rules and in the end a true European Economic Governance which has the democratic legitimacy and efficiency to deal with the various challenges", said Jo Leinen.
Speaking in Dublin today, EM Ireland Executive Director, Noelle O’Connell, welcomed the fact that the referendum campaign has concluded. A majority of Irish people have voted ‘Yes’ to the Fiscal Treaty, with Ireland becoming the fourth Eurozone country to ratify the Treaty. According to Noelle, “This has been a challenging time for Ireland’s relationship with Europe and for Irish voters, who were faced with a difficult choice. The most important thing now is that there is a concerted effort at a European level to work with all Member States to drive the growth agenda and bring stability to the Euro.”

Background: A large majority of voters yesterday ratified the European Fiscal Compact for Ireland. All but two EU countries (Great Britain and the Czech Republic) had signed the Fiscal Compact on 2 March 2012, with Ireland being the only country to hold a popular vote on Europe’s new fiscal treaty.
