Mário Soares: A committed European

Portugal is observing three days of national mourning for Mário Soares, who many regarded as the father of the country’s democracy.

Soares founded the Portuguese Socialist Party, led the country’s effort to enter the European Union, and served as President of the Republic from 1986 to 1996.

Between 1997 – 1999 he was President of the European Movement, following which he also served as a Member of the European Parliament, from 1999 – 2004.

Under the presidency of Mário Soares, the activities of the European Movement International included proposals for a review of the Maastricht Treaty, the review of the European Parliament election system, more attention given to citizenship and social aspects and a look at the neighbouring regions.
