Informal Meeting of Ministers responsible for Competitiveness (Research)
The program envisages that delegation leaders visit the Rimac Automobile Electric Car Factory on the first day, February 3, to produce the first car manufactured and exported by Croatia as a country, followed by a gala dinner at the Mimara Museum, a precious example of the Neo-Renaissance palace. The Ministerial debate will take place the next day, 4 February, on the topic of brain circulation and a vision of the future European Research Area.

Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan – Let’s strive for more
On World Cancer Day, the European Commission will start its outreach on Europe’s Cancer Plan at an event in the European Parliament in Brussels, supported by the MEPs Against Cancer Interest Group. While the EU has a long history in the fight against cancer, there are still many challenges ahead. This event aims to demonstrate the EU’s strong commitment to fighting cancer and to harness the collective power for positive change.

International conference on forests for biodiversity and climate change
Pressures on EU forest ecosystems due to climate change and unsustainable forest management are reasons for concern and are expected to increase in the future. Overall, protecting forests means protecting biodiversity and working for a climate neutral and climate resilient land. In this context, DG Environment organises an International Conference on Forest for Biodiversity and Climate on 4-5 February 2020 in Brussels.

Engaging citizens for good governance in cohesion policy
The event, organised by the Commission’s Directorate-General for regional and urban policy, will bring together citizens, representatives of civil society, politicians, policymakers and academia, and will focus on how to foster closer cooperation with citizens and civil society and give them a more prominent role in the governance of the policy, as well as in the implementation of the EU-funded projects on the ground and the dissemination of their results.

The effects of campaigns on participation in European political decision-making
In view of the European elections and campaigns aimed at informing European citizens conducted by the institutions of the European Union and the Member States, a public hearing will be held. The aim of is to examine the current state of play and lessons learned from the May 2019 elections, and to look at the ways forward, i.e. how to enhance participation and disable disinformation of European citizens.

Information session on 2020 CoR events and activities
The meeting will take place on 3 February 2020 at 14:30-16:30 in JDE 52, European Committee of the Regions (Rue Belliard 101, 1040 Brussels). At the meeting, we will present and discuss our main events and communication activities in the upcoming months, focusing on European Committee of the Regions´ main events of 2020, communication campaigns and press and social media actions.
Stakeholder consultation on “Just Transition Fund”
CoR is drafting an opinion on the “Just Transition Fund” (the European Commission’s legislative proposals COM(2020) 22 and COM(2020) 23). The rapporteur-general for the opinion, Mr Vojko Obersnel (HR/Group of the Party of European Socialists), Mayor of the City of Rijeka, would be happy to meet with representatives of local and regional associations and other stakeholders for a consultation and an exchange of views on the relevant topic of this opinion.

Venice Commission – 5th meeting Modernisation of the civil service in the southern Mediterranean
The 5th coordination meeting of the UniDem project for the southern Mediterranean will be taking place. This annual meeting will gather the national coordinators of the following partner countries: Algeria, Jordan, Morocco, Palestine* and Tunisia. The participants will take stock of the 2019 UniDem Med seminars and will discuss the priorities as regards the modernisation of the public administration in their respective countries.

On Saturday, Irish voters will head to the polls to elect their new government, following Taoiseach Leo Varadkar’s request to dissolve the 32nd Dáil. Varadkar’s party, Fine Gael, has led a minority government in a coalition with independent politicians since 2016.
