On Tuesday, 5 July 2022, from 10:00-11:30 CEST, the European Movement International will hold its upcoming online panel discussion entitled “Building on the Conference on the Future of Europe: The Way Forward“. Now that the Conference on the Future of Europe has come to and end, the institutions have begun to provide a follow up to the citizens’ proposals. Key demands such as the end of the unanimity in the Council, electoral reforms or the European Defence Union are being extensively debated, amongst a great number of other ambitious ideas from the citizens. This panel discussion will provide an opportunity to discuss the results and future expectations of the Conference as well as the current discussion on the implementation of this initiative, by taking into account both the demands of those citizens who take part in the Conference and the role that institutions, national parliaments, civil society and social partners will play in the follow-up process.

Wednesday 6 July
Affordable and sustainable housing in the EU
This conference will be co-organised by the European Economic and Social Committee and the Ministry of Economics of Latvia and it will bring together local, national and European actors to discuss the challenges and solutions of building sustainable and affordable housing. The current energy supply crisis triggered by the war in Ukraine and the unprecedented increase in energy prices, on top of the economic and social consequences of the COVID-19 crisis, have intensified the severity of the affordable housing crisis that EU Member States have been facing for years. Access to good quality and affordable housing is a basic need of the European population; it is key to achieving a number of economic, environmental and social policy objectives and to promoting equal opportunities, social inclusion and mobility. A special focus will be put on the role of civil society organisations and local authorities on the ground in achieving ownership, bottom-up participation in housing policies, proper information to the direct beneficiaries and financing facilitation.
The rule of law: why should we care?
Participants in the hearing will discuss how fundamental rights and the rule of law are interconnected and ineffective without each other. Speakers will offer an overview of key rule of law principles and what they mean for the daily lives of the European population. They will also discuss the various factors which are used to measure a country’s performance in the area. Finally, they will evoke the current trends in Slovakia, in the Visegrad Group region, and in the European Union in general.

Committee of the Regions
Wednesday 6 July – Thursday 7 July
7th Enlargement Day
The Enlargement Day is the CoR’s annual flagship event on EU enlargement policy, first held in 2015. Its raison d’être is the growing realization among the EU institutions and partner countries alike that a country joining the EU needs to prepare not only its central government and administration for accession, but also its local and regional authorities. This year’s Enlargement Day faces a changed political reality with a major war and huge geopolitical shifts in Europe. The Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the ensuing EU membership applications of Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova have changed the landscape of the enlargement policy. For the first time, delegates from those countries will attend the event. This year’s event also celebrates 2022 as the European Year of Youth. For the young people in the enlargement countries, many of the opportunities – available to their fellow young Europeans in the EU – remain elusive. This year’s Enlargement Day will explore what the needs and priorities of the young are, and whether they can mobilize to move the process forward themselves. The Enlargement Day consists of six events: on 6 July, five meetings of the Joint Consultative Committees and Working Groups that deal with the CoR’s relations with individual countries. They are followed on 7 July by a high-level plenary session.
