Plenary session
The European Parliament will hold its Plenary session in Brussels due to health risks of COVID-19. A full overview of the debates and votes that will be held throughout the week can be found here.
Tuesday 15 September
International Democracy Day
On the occasion of International Democracy Day, a conference hosted by the European Parliament from 14 to 17 September will look at the challenges the Covid-19 crisis poses to democratic systems. More information can be found here.

European Council
Monday 14 September
EU-China Meeting
The meeting is a follow-up to the 22nd EU-China summit that took place on 22 June and will be chaired by President Michel on the EU side and President Xi on the Chinese side. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, and, for the Council presidency, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Josep Borrell will also participate. The leaders will discuss EU-China relations including climate change, economic and trade issues. Leaders will also discuss international and other issues of concern and exchange views on responses to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Informal meeting of education ministers
The aim of the meeting is to agree upon concrete steps for closer cooperation in education and research and to adopt a joint communiqué. Participants will also meet with practitioners to discuss vocational education and training and European cooperation in education.
Friday 18 September
Competitiveness Council
Ministers in charge of internal market and industry will focus on Europe’s recovery from the economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic. More information can be found here.
Sunday 20 September – Monday 21 September
Informal meeting of Trade Ministers
Trade Ministers will convene to discuss current trade deal policy challenges.

EU takes part in UN General Assembly
For the 75th UN General Assembly, the EU will focus on key priorities such as human rights and gender equality, promoting peace and security, building a fair globalisation, accelerating the global transition towards sustainable and climate-neutral future, and leading the transition to a new digital world. Preserving the humanitarian space and ensuring respect for international humanitarian law and humanitarian principles will remain equally important for the EU.

This event, organised under the auspices of the German Presidency of the Council of the EU, brings together experts from the EU institutions and countries to discuss the opportunities and challenges of digital transformation and of new technologies for the armed forces, and to work together to identify potential solutions for dealing with these. The German Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (BMAS) aims to boost European solidarity. High-ranking political decision-makers, representatives of social partners, civil society and the academic community from across Europe will discuss the topic ‘Our social Europe – Strong together’. Workshop on a successful Green Deal
Standardisation is an important tool for achieving the objectives of European policies and of the Green Deal in particular. Successful examples of the work on standardisation in industry and the circular economy will show what opportunities standardisation offers, particularly with a view to achieving the Green Deal. This event, organised under the auspices of the German Presidency of the Council of the EU, provides a platform to discuss current problems and challenges for the European system of harmonised standards together with representatives from government, associations and commerce, and to develop potential solutions. Webinar Financial needs in the agriculture and agri-food sectors in the Baltic countries
The webinar will focus on the financial environment in which farmers and processors operate in the Baltic countries: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. It will be organised together with the Directorate General for Agriculture and Rural Development (DG AGRI). It will consider the region’s banking systems, the major financial players in the two sectors, the loans and guarantees available and various financial schemes supported by national and EU financing. Moreover, stakeholders and managing authorities will also share their experience in working with financial instruments. More information about the event can be found here.
