European Movement International


Tuesday 18 May 

EuropeanChats with AEGEE & ALDA
The European Movement International will hold the eighth edition of EuropeanChats, this time featuring AEGEE and ALDA. This event will feature guest speakers Veronika Chmelárová, Secretary General of AEGEE, and Antonella Valmorbida, Secretary General of ALDA. EuropeanChats gathers activists and stakeholders from the European Movement International network, to discuss with European citizens different issues surrounding the COVID-19 crisis, and how it affects European economies and societies. We also aim to tackle the wider debate around the future of Europe.

Debates: There will be debates on Energy and Hydrogen; Just Transition Fund; Impact of EU rules on the free movements of workers and services: intra-EU labour mobility as a tool to match labour market needs and skills; The impacts of climate change on vulnerable populations in developing countries; Accelerating progress and tackling inequalities towards ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. There will also be presentations of the following reports: Review of the European Union Solidarity Fund; and Challenges of sports events organisers in the digital environment.

Council of Ministers


Monday 17 May

Informal meeting of the ministers of European Affairs
European Affairs Ministers meet in Coimbra for an informal General Affairs Council focused on the future. There will be presentation and discussions on the ultraperipheral regions of the EU as laboratories for the future in areas such as sustainability, the digital transition and youth. There will also be an exchange of opinions on resilience and strategic autonomy in the EU.

Monday 17 – Tuesday 18 May

Education, Youth, Culture and Sports Council
Ministers will discuss equity and inclusion in education and training, the European Universities initiative and participation of young people in decision-making processes. They will also focus on the sustainability of the creative sector, the media and audio-visual action plan and sport innovation.

Thursday 20 May

Foreign Affairs Council
The presidency and the Commission will inform EU trade ministers about the international procurement instrument. The Council will aim to approve conclusions on the trade policy review. Ministers will also review the state of play of the WTO reform and preparations for the next ministerial conference, and focus on EU-US trade relations. They will take stock of the state of play of steel safeguards and the EU-Mercosur trade agreement. Ministers will also exchange views with the director-general of the WTO Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and the United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai.

Friday 21 May

Eurogroup
Topics to be discussed include an exchange of views with the chair of the ECON committee of the European Parliament on macroeconomic and fiscal developments in the euro area; a thematic discussion: Functioning of adjustment mechanisms within the euro area – insights from the COVID-19 pandemic; the Eurogroup work programme H2 2021; and reporting on banking union operational aspects.

Friday 21- Saturday 22 May

Informal meeting of economic and financial affairs ministers
Finance and Economic Ministers meet to discuss the common policies for the post-crisis period and for a green and inclusive future. The meeting will also be attended by the Governors of Member State central banks.

Monday 17 May

2nd Schengen Forum
The Commission will convene the second Schengen Forum, bringing together members of the European Parliament and the interior ministers of the Member States. The Forum will focus on improving the coordination of border measures in times of crisis and discuss effective alternatives to the reintroduction of border controls, with the aim of maintaining the free movement of people and goods within the Schengen area. Other topics of discussion include the possibilities of using new technologies and innovation to facilitate mobility between the 26 Schengen states. The results of Monday’s discussions will feed into the long-term strategy for the future of Schengen, which will be presented in June this year.

College Meeting
This week the college discuss a communication on business taxation for the 21st century, and a communication on the global approach to research and innovation.

The European Citizens’ Initiative step by step
This webinar will focus on practical guidance on the different procedural steps of a European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI). It will explore all the different steps, from the preparation and registration to the signatures collection and the verification and submission. Experts will share their expertise on the subject and provide participants with tips and hints related to the procedural steps. They will highlight the best practices to follow to successfully prepare and register an initiative and later continue on an ECI journey.

Thursday 20 May

Clean Energy for EU Islands Forum
This online event will consist of political panel discussions, workshops, an exhibition area and networking/matchmaking opportunities. The forum’s secretariat will present practical steps towards the decarbonisation of EU islands and showcase ongoing and completed clean energy projects on islands. The 2-day event will be a knowledge hub on the EU clean energy transition on islands. It will provide participants with a platform to gain visibility for their initiatives, to get technical assistance for designing, preparing, and implementing their decarbonisation plans and to get assistance on project funding.

This online webinar will evaluate how the crisis impacted the Single Market and how it can be a powerful resource for a stable economic recovery. The EESC Workers’ Group are hosting a webinar to discuss t he issue of the Adequate Minimum Wages Directive and the European Commission’s proposal for a directive on adequate minimum wages has sparked controversy among member states and social partners alike across Europe.

Public hearing on how the pandemic has affected the labour market
The EESC’s Labour Market Observatory will hold a remote public hearing on how the pandemic has affected the labour market. The event will examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the labour market on the impact of remote work in the light of the pandemic, and how the pandemic has affected low-wage sectors of the labour market.

Stakeholders consultation on Protecting Industrial and Craft Geographical Indications in the EU
This online consultation aims at capturing the views of all relevant stakeholders on the problems related to the existing legal protection of authentic geographically-rooted non-agricultural products within the internal market; on the benefits and risk of EU action; on the available policy options including the control and enforcement of a future EU-protection system for such products; on the potential impacts of these policy options.

Thursday 20 May

NAT commission meeting
The 8th NAT commission meeting will adopt the following opinions: Resilience of critical entities and new Consumer Agenda – Strengthening consumer resilience for sustainable recovery. There will also be an exchange of views on the EU action plan for organic farming and Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan

Portuguese Presidency


Monday 17 – Tuesday 18 May

Conference on the “Rule of Law in Europe”
This hybrid conference is organised by the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union and the European Commission. will take stock of the efforts undertaken across the European Union to promote and uphold the Rule of Law, and will discuss how the EU can further promote a Rule of Law culture. It will bring together policy makers and representatives of civil society at both EU and national level, representatives of the judiciary, European judicial networks, relevant European associations, and legal practitioners.

Webinar on “Forest Restoration”
The Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the EU and the European Regional Office of the International Union for Conservation of Nature are hosting this webinar on the future of forests in Europe, thus celebrating the International Day for Biological Diversity. The restoration of these ecosystems will be a fundamental tool in tackling the twin crises of biodiversity loss and climate change, while at the same time the EU Forest Strategy must ensure the coherence of forest-related policies and allow synergies with the forest-based sector.

EIB at the 2021 International Association for Impact Assessment annual conference
The EIB will are organising the European Forum – a series of four events, in partnership with International Association for Impact Assessment as an institutional partner. The European Forum events will focus on progress in the climate, environmental and social agenda of European multilateral financial institutions (MFIs) in the light of the latest policy developments, best practices in sustainable finance, and fostering dialogue around emerging issues in environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) risk management.
