EP President and political groups’ leaders will meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Bundestag President Wolfgang Schäuble (participating remotely) ahead of the German Presidency of the Council starting on 1 July. They will meet Michel Barnier, Head of Task Force for Relations with the United Kingdom, to discuss the latest developments in the talks with UK.

Monday 25 May

General Affairs Council
The members of the European Economic Area Council will discuss, via video conference, the overall functioning of the EEA Agreement and the effect of COVID-19 on the internal market. There will also be a debate on the European Green Deal, with the participation of Frans Timmermans, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, and exchange of views on the EU-UK negotiations with Michel Barnier, Head of the Task Force for Relations with the UK. The ministers will also discuss the external dimension of the COVID-19 crisis.

Tuesday 26 May

European Affairs Council
Ministers for European Affairs will discuss the progress achieved in connection with the coordination of de-escalation measures in the context of the COVID-19 crisis. There will also be a debate on a comprehensive economic and social recovery of the EU, including an adjusted long-term EU budget and the accompanying recovery instrument. The European Commission will inform ministers about the preparation of the annual report on the rule of law in the EU.

The FRA Director will present findings of its second COVID-19 bulletin to MEPs. The presentation will be part of the European Parliament’s Democracy, Rule of Law and Fundamental Rights Monitoring Group. During the meeting, he will also present results from its Fundamental Rights Platform consultation on civic space.
