This extraordinary meeting of home affairs ministers will discuss the situation in Afghanistan.
Wednesday 1 – Thursday 2 September
Informal meeting of defence ministers
The main working session of the meeting will be dedicated to the discussion on the Strategic Compass. The document that is going to be drafted during Slovenia’s presidency of the Council of the EU will include policy recommendations on four areas (called “baskets”): crisis management, partnerships, capability development, and resilience. The ministers will specifically focus on resilience, where they will also consider a set of tools for dealing with hybrid threats, and how to provide access to the global commons (cyberspace, maritime, space). The Ministers will also focus on developments in EU operational activities, in particular in the Sahel, Libya, Mozambique and the Western Balkans. The meeting will conclude with a working lunch at which the Ministers will have the opportunity to discuss the common geostrategic challenges and opportunities for further cooperation with Partner countries within NATO and the UN. NATO Deputy Secretary General, Mircea Geoanᾶ, and the UN Undersecretary for Peacekeeping Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, will join the ministers for this discussion.

International Conference on Science Advice to Governments
This international conference will bring together more than 1,500 political representatives, diplomats and government science advisors to promote scientific expertise and the use of scientific knowledge in informing policy decisions in an increasingly complex world. INGSA2021 will examine the complex interactions between scientists, public policy and diplomatic relations at local, national and international levels, including in times of crisis, such as the current COVID-19 pandemic.
Johansson in New York
Commissioner Johansson travels to New York City, USA, this week to meet with UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres as well as representatives of the US administration and business.

Bled Strategic Forum
The European heads of state and EU high representatives will address key future challenges, including EU enlargement, the importance of transatlantic and Indo-Pacific cooperation, regional challenges in the Eastern Partnership countries, stability in the Mediterranean, joint management of the Adriatic Sea, as well as debates on climate change and the responses to it, digitalisation and cybersecurity, along with economic and tourism recovery.
Thursday 2 – Friday 3 September
Cyber Security Conference
Cyber security directors, cyber ambassadors and cyber attachés from EU Member States and the Western Balkans, together with representatives from companies and academia, researchers and public employees will discuss best practices among EU Member States and other countries regarding the strengthening of the cyber resilience of critical infrastructure in the digital single market in the event of cyberattacks, in the area of cyber crisis management in the EU, and cyber diplomacy and cyber security in the Western Balkans.
Horizontal Working Party on Cyber Issues
The working visit of attachés will examine current issues in the field of cyber security in view of the priorities of the Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Attachés from the member states will become acquainted with Slovenian best practices in the field of cyber security presented by Slovenian stakeholders from public administration, the scientific and academic sphere, and Slovenian breakthrough companies in this field. During their visit, attachés will also attend the Cyber Security Conference.

Fundamental Rights Dialogue at Young Bled Strategic Forum
Approximately 30 young people from the region will have the opportunity to discuss their human rights views, aspirations and concerns with FRA’s Director. It will also be an opportunity to voice their ideas for solutions. The third Fundamental Rights Dialogue will be livestreamed. The outcomes of the Dialogues will feature during the Fundamental Rights Forum 2021 in October(link is external).

The Selection Panel of the PACE Václav Havel Human Rights Prize will hold its first meeting and shortlist three candidates out of the candidatures received for this years Award. The 2021 Award Ceremony will take place in September.
