Belgian central banker to be keynote speaker at ELEC dinner
Dear ELEC friend,
Breaking news. Jan Smets, director of the National Bank of Belgium, will be the keynote speaker at the ELEC dinner on Thursday December 5th, 2013, in Brussels. He was kind enough to accept to share his thoughts on European integration with us on short notice. Yves Leterme, deputy secretary general of the OECD and former Belgian prime minister, who originally was to hold the keynote speech, let it know that he has an unforeseen commitment in Marseille that day. Mr. Jan Smets is a high ranking official at the Belgian central bank and in Belgian economic life. Not only is he the head of the research department and as such chief economist of the Belgium central bank, he is also chairman or member of the many advisory councils that play a role in the Belgian economy. At the time of the introduction of the euro, Smets was in charge of this operation in Belgium.
The dinner is part of the ELEC year-end gatherings in Brussels. It bridges the meeting of our Economic and Social Commission on Thursday December 5th that convenes on the contribution of banks to the economic upturn, and the meeting of ELEC’s Central Council on Friday December 6th.
Kindest regards,
Jerry van Waterschoot
Secretary General
