EM Germany: Broad support for Central European University
“It is unworthy of any democracy to attack and discriminate a university because it educates its students and forges them to become critical and responsible decision-makers, and because some of its publications don’t stop short of scrutinizing recent Hungarian politics. Such behaviour does not in any way relate with the principles of the European Union. As Europeans, we see the politics of the Hungarian administration as an attack on our values and beliefs.” In a joint statement, civil societal organisations and public personalities – many of which belong to EM Germany –, the European institutions, the German federal council and parliament demand the assured continued existence of Central European University (CEU) in Budapest. On Tuesday, the Hungarian parliament had voted for amendments to the national law for higher education that threatened the continuing operation of CEU. At the time of this writing, more than ten of EM Germany’s board members and almost 15 representatives of EM Germany’s member organisations have already voiced their support for this issue.
Please find the full appeal to the Hungarian government on EM Germany’s website (in German) and the website of iep (in English).
