EMI Statement: A Bigger EU needs a stronger and deeper Union among its Members

The European Movement International welcomes the historic decision to grant the status of EU candidate country to Ukraine and to the Republic of Moldova, and to recognise Georgia’s European perspective. This decision demonstrates the EU’s support for the reform efforts these countries are making and for their dedication to the European values, especially in the face of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.

Bringing into the fold neighbouring democracies is at the heart of the European project. It offers the opportunity to build a stronger, safer and peaceful continent. To bolster our ability to welcome new members into the European family, we need to deepen our Union and pursue reforms that will enable the EU to speak with a united voice and to take bold decisions as one. We need a Union ready and able to face the challenges of our times.

As we set forth with our neighbours, towards a shared European future based on peace and fundamental values, we commit to ensure that democracy will prevail against authoritarianism, always and everywhere.
