EM Serbia – First Belgrade Security Forum, 14-16 September 2011

The first Belgrade Security Forum will be held on 14-16 September 2011 in Belgrade, Serbia. It is a new security initiative, hosted by the Belgrade Fund for Political Excellence, the European Movement in Serbia and the Belgrade Centre for Security Policy.

The purpose of the Belgrade Security Forum is to bring the European and global security debate to the Balkans, to discuss Balkan security issues within the European and global security framework and to present Balkan achievements and dilemmas to the participants in the European and global security debate.

The upcoming conference will host panel debates on various topics related to global and European security challenges. Among others, the renowned participants will discuss threats and regions of key concern in different parts of the world; the role of “old leaders” and the new emerging powers in sharing the burden of global governance; the implications of the European security architecture and the relevance of its transformative potential to frozen conflicts and weak states; the lessons learned in the Balkans regarding conflict transformation, state-building process and security cooperation.
Inspired by the Summit of EU Women Ministers and the activities in the Balkans related to the implementation of UNSCR 1325, the Belgrade Security Forum will also highlight the role of women leaders in the security sector. The closing plenary session will examine the transformation of the Balkans from a security problem to a security partner.
