The European Movement International is deeply concerned about the latest comments by British Prime Minister David Cameron on the treatment of EU citizens from certain countries, especially Romania and Bulgaria, and his threat to “remove them“ from the country, in case they don’t find work in due time.

The EMI recalls that the fundamental freedoms of free movement of goods, services and capital go hand in hand with the EU citizens’ fundamental right to move freely within the Union. These four fundamental freedoms constitute the core of European law and must be fully respected by all EU Member States. Furthermore safeguards to prevent the exploitation of social security systems are already in place and studies show that the vast majority of intra-EU-migrants move to other EU countries to work and thus contribute to  economic growth.

The EMI calls on the UK government to address its concerns about an ‘excessive influx’ of EU citizens to the UK in a fact-based and rational debate.

“The UK signed up to the principles and enjoy the benefits that the four freedoms have provided British citizens.  It would seem to be a very retrograde step to deny these benefits to other members of the EU.”

“This balanced position shows that the EMI remains the most authentic voice of the citizens and a guardian of the fundamental values and the spirit of the European treaties. We are very grateful for this support, which is very important for us, but also for all other citizens in our common European house."
