EMI supports pro-European movement in Ukraine

December 3, 2013

The European Movement International (EMI) supports the pro-European protesters in Ukraine that have gathered in Kiev’s Independence Square and across the country, after the Ukrainian government gave in to Russian pressure and suspended the signature of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement.

The EMI calls on the government of Viktor Yanukovych to fully respect the fundamental freedoms of expression and assembly of Ukraine’s citizens, and condemns the use of force by either party.

The EMI reiterates its stance that negotiations with the Eastern Partnership countries are essential for reform and modernisation, bringing long-term benefits for these countries.

Jo Leinen, President, European Movement International, said:
“We are seeing the formation of a new European citizens’ movement in Ukraine. The protests show that the EU has not lost its attractiveness. Many Ukrainians want to be part of the EU family. The EU’s offer is still on the table and the Ukrainian people should be able to freely decide its future."
