German President signs Lisbon Treaty

German President Horst Köhler signed on Wednesday this week the accompanying laws to the Lisbon Treaty.
After the legislative acts passed the German Parliament and the Council of Constituent States, Köhler cleared the way for the final accreditation.

The parliament and the council of constituent states had long since approved the treaty itself. Köhler was holding back his signature because of pending juridical questions addressed to the Federal Constitutional Court.

The German highest court dismissed those complaints related to the fact that the Lisbon Treaty one in force would hand over too much power to Brussels. The Constitutional Court instead demanded the implemented changes to the accompanying laws that govern the rights of the German parliament.

With the submission of the documents to the Italian Government this Friday, Germany has officially ratified the Reform Treaty of Lisbon.
