Greek debt crisis: Deal at Eurogroup summit must protect European citizens

The European Movement International calls on the Greek government and its European partners in the Eurozone to resolve the dispute over the Greek sovereign debt. The crucial Eurogroup summit, this Monday 16 February, must be conducted in a constructive way that works for both the whole Eurozone and for Greece.

European citizens expect their leaders to end the struggle over Greece’s future in the Eurozone, which obstructs economic recovery in Europe and leads to turmoil in the financial markets. The Eurogroup should leave no doubt that the monetary union will stand together and not give up on any of its members.

Jo Leinen, President, European Movement International, said:

“A solution safeguarding the fundamental social rights of the Greek citizens, as well as the stability of the Eurozone and sustainable public finances, can only be found if all actors take on a flexible and pragmatic approach, instead of insisting on maximal demands.

European citizens had to pay a high price for the stabilisation of the Eurozone. The progress made must not be put at risk by letting a possible Grexit loom over the monetary union, threatening its stability. The sole focus must now be to kick-start the European economy in order to improve the situation of European citizens.
