JEF’s letter to Donald Tusk: A Call to preserve the Schengen principles

The Young European Federalists (alongside European Movement members AEGEE, ESN, CESI) have initiated a common letter to call upon the European Council to preserve the Schengen principles.

Today, the presidents of 16 large pan-European youth organisations, including all major party political youth organisations and the European Youth Forum, sent an open letter to President Tusk. Together these organisations represent millions of young Europeans.

The letter calls upon the European Council to adopt European solutions to manage migration and security issues while maintaining the core principles of the European Union. These solutions must include an EU border force and stronger cooperation between European police and security forces, but also a common European asylum policy with better legal channels to ensure the rights of migrants and refugees and a permanent redistributive quota system to replace the Dublin Regulation.

Christopher Glück, president of the Young European Federalists, the initiators of the letter, says: “Open borders are one of Europe’s greatest milestones – we want to keep it that way. In the name of the European youth we demand solutions for the future, not from the past.”
