Statement on social and political situation in Azerbaijan

Police have illegaly intervened in demosntration organised by Public Chamber april 17. The civilians have been violated, a lot of persons injured and number of people arrested during the rally. The action  undertaken by police is appreciated  as violations of human rights.

During the demosntration about 160 persons and 2 foreign journalistes from Sweden  were arrested. The members of the European Movement in Azerbaijan Cavid Mehraliyev was expelled from Baku State University and Hacibala Abdullayev arrested by police.

The European Movement in Azerbaijan consider the claims against Mr.C..Mehraliyev and Mr. H.Abdullayev  to be unbased and unfaire and also appreciate this act as part of one of the worst plan that prepared before.

The recent democratic changes in arabian countries make the present government of azerbaijan to be under concern. All the TV channels, medias that are under auspicious of government propaganda the regimes in these countries and criticise the UN and NATO’s interventions in these countries. Also through these channels they conduct Anti-European propaganda and call for creation of dictatorship in these countreis. For example: the Head of the Commission on Human Rights of the Parliament Rabiyyet Aslanova speaking on TV said that this is crusade of Europe against Azerbaijan. (The Head of the Commission on Human Rights?)

The European Movement in Azerbaijan is concerned for a long time for undeclared state of emergency situation, violation of human rights and freedoms in the country. Existing situation shows the real face of the Azerbaijanian government.

Surkhan Latifov

President of European Movement in Azerbaijan
