Talking Europe with Salla Saastamoinen, Acting Director General of DG JUST
On Thursday, 16 September from 14:00-15:00 CEST, we will hold our eighth edition of Talking Europe organised in partnership with the European Commission, this time featuring Salla Saastamoinen, Acting Director General of DG JUST. This series of online events launched in 2020 aims to discuss the EU’s work and how it affects all Europeans. Our guest Salla Saastamoinen, Acting Director General of DG JUST, will discuss the recent work of DG for Justice and Consumers, including the state of the rule of law in the European Union, the promotion of gender equality and women’s rights, as well as the developments around the New Consumer Agenda.

Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will deliver her annual State of the European Union address to the European Parliament. The section for Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment (NAT) of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is organising an online public hearing to gather stakeholders’ and civil society’s views on the new EU Forest Strategy for 2030, which will feed into the preparation of the EESC opinion on this topic.

Friday 17 September

Environmental protection as a prerequisite for respect for fundamental rights
The Sustainable Development Observatory (SDO) of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is organising an online public hearing to gather the views of environmental law specialists, international institutions and other stakeholders. The debate will feed into the preparation of the SDO information report on the topic of the Environmental protection as a prerequisite for respect for fundamental rights.

Eurostat’s 2021 Regional Yearbook  
The Eurostat regional yearbook provides a statistical overview of the regions of the EU across a broad range of subjects. The event will host Márta Nagy-Rothengass, Bianka Fohgrub and Oliver Heiden from Eurostat to explore the highlights of this year’s Eurostat regional yearbook and how to make use of regional data for further analyses or policy application.

Webminar on Involving civil society in the Future of Europe conference
The webminar will explore how civil society organisations can be involved and contribute to the Conference on the Future of Europe. Speakers hail from the Conference Secretariat and the Civil Society Convention on the Future of Europe. They will share with participants how organisations can get involved in the discussions about the future of Europe, and feed into the conference’s outcomes.

Friday 17 September

Experts focus on fundamental rights in security legislation
The German Institute for Human Rights organises the meeting. FRA will refer to its impact assessment of the EU’s Counter-Terrorism Directive on fundamental rights.

Monday 13 September

Western Balkans Rail Summit 2021
The year 2021 is designated as the European Year of Rail, highlighting the benefits of rail as a sustainable, smart, and safe means of transport. As part of this special year, the European Investment Bank (EIB), Transport Community (TCT) and European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), decided to organise a first ever regional Western Balkans Rail Summit on 13 September 2021 in Belgrade.

Monday 13 September

Online workshop
The Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe and the National Association of Local Authorities of Georgia (NALAG) will organise a workshop on preventing and combatting sexism at local level, in the framework of the Council of Europe’s project in Georgia. Speakers include Jelena Drenjanin, Congress Thematic Spokesperson on Gender Equality, and Andreas Kiefer, Secretary General of the Congress.

Friday 17 September

Monitoring Committee of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities
The Monitoring Committee of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities chaired by Gudrun Mosler-Törnström will meet to discuss monitoring reports and monitoring visits in preparation concerning local and regional democracy in Europe. Committee members will also share information on the third volume of the Handbook on human rights at local and regional levels and on the observation of local and regional elections, including the regional and municipal elections in Morocco held on 8 September.
