Online workshop “The EU and the Pillar of Social Rights”
If you are between 18 and 30 and want to develop your network and professional skills while learning more about policy advocacy in the European Union and the European Pillar of Social Rights, sign up for the European Movement International’s online workshop entitled ‘The European Union and the Pillar of Social Rights‘ (CET: 09.00 – 13.00 & 14.00 – 15.30). This workshop is part of the Just EU and Me project, a transnational capacity-building programme led by ActionAid which aims at providing young people and representatives of youth associations with knowledge, skills, and opportunities for actively participating in developing recommendations to improve EU and Member States’ policies implementing the European Pillar of Social Rights and addressing social justice issues such as access to education, gender equality, equal opportunities, etc.

Agriculture and Fisheries Council
The Swedish presidency will present its work programme for the coming semester in the field of agriculture and fisheries. Ministers will receive information from the Commission and the member states, and exchange views on the current market situation, particularly in light of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Ministers will discuss the opportunities of the bioeconomy in light of current challenges, with a special emphasis on rural areas. They will also address the agricultural aspects of the revision of the Industrial Emission Directive and the revision of the animal transport legislation, an essential part of the food production.

During the 206th meeting of the Section for External Relations of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), which comes nearly one year after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, a debate will be held on the resilience of Ukrainian civil society and on the EU support to the country.

Croatia, welcome to the euro area!
On 1 January 2023, Croatia became the 20th member of the euro area. The introduction of the euro was preceded by a long process of convergence and Croatia’s accession to the euro area comes in a time of economic challenges following the pandemic and due to the war in Ukraine. High inflation and high debt coupled with low growth prospects will challenge policy makers in the euro area and central bankers in the months to come. Against this background, the ECO section will organise a debate to discuss the prospects for Croatia and the euro area, also in view of future enlargements.

Towards a European Social Union: the ‘Social Imbalances Procedure’
As part of its work to prepare an opinion on “Mechanisms of social imbalance”, the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is organising a hybrid public hearing. The discussion will focus on how to best develop a specific mechanism for detecting and monitoring social imbalances in the EU.

Democracy at work
In order to prepare an exploratory opinion requested by the upcoming Spanish presidency, the EESC is organising a hybrid public hearing on “Democracy at work”. The hearing will deal with issues such as the regulatory changes for workers’ participation required to adapt to new working and production environments, the representative basis, roles and capacity of European Works Councils, strengthening collective action, the impact of new supervision, organisation and decision-making technology on democratic values, including political participation and fundamental rights at work, and  the contribution of the participation of workers in management and decision-making in companies to a just green transition.

Conference on cancer
The Swedish Presidency’s high-level conference on cancer is being jointly organised with the European Commission. The conference builds on the new EU Beating Cancer Plan from 2021, and focuses on three main areas: prevention, early detection and data-driven cancer care. Equitable cancer care for everyone will be an overarching theme throughout the conference. Conference attendees will include leading cancer experts from health care and academia and high-level political delegates.

Economic perspectives on gender-based violence – paving paths to prevention
This two-day conference organised by the Swedish Presidency will have three plenary sessions focusong on: “Economic perspectives on gender-based violence – paving paths to prevention”; “Unpacking economic violence and abuse – how a standardised approach such as the Istanbul convention shows the way”; “Preventing gender-based violence in the world of work”. It will also feature workshops.

Conference on the follow-up to the Democracy Here | Democracy Now campaign
In the framework of Presidency of Iceland of the Committee of Ministers, the Council of Europe will organise a conference on the evaluation and follow-up of the youth campaign Democracy Here | Democracy Now. The conference will bring together 80 activists, representatives of youth civil society and of national authorities to take stock of the results of the youth campaign and to plan its follow-up in 2023. The follow-up to the campaign will be done through the project “Youth revitalising democracy” which aims to respond to the current challenges faced by democratic institutions and systems.
