European Youth Forum: Youth for a Sustainable Europe!

Last week marked a significant milestone – the second anniversary of the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In this context, a conference organised by the Young European Federalists (JEF Europe) in the framework of the LADDER project (Local Authorities as Drivers for Development Education and Raising Awareness) took place from 25 to 27 of September. The conference, ‘Youth for Sustainable Europe’ brought together European and local policy-makers, youth and civil society organisations, along with young people from all over Europe to discuss the role of youth in contributing to sustainable development.

Through discussions and workshops, together with citizens and decision-makers, participants shared ideas to try to find solutions to the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals at the European, national and local levels.

Despite commitment from European leaders, the EU is still lagging behind on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. As Youth Forum Secretary General, Anna Widegren, states:

“Young people will suffer the most from the current European short-term approach towards Sustainable Development. The European Commission must take the lead in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and shift towards long-lasting and sustainable solutions with real impact. The structured involvement of young people, youth organisations and civil society is essential to build a sustainable future for Europe and the world.”
