The European Movement International welcomes three new members to its Honorary Council
We are delighted to announce, that Joaquín Almunia, John Gerard Bruton and Anna Diamantopoulou have just joined the European Movement International’s Honorary Council following a decision by its Board.
The Council, which includes experts from their fields, such as former President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso and former President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy, helps the European Movement International achieve its goals of moving Europe forward, furthering European identity and integration.
Mr. Alumnia, one of Spain’s most experienced politicians regarding International Affairs, was the European Commission Vice – President and European Commissioner for Competition from 2010 to 2014, and prior to that he was the European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs from 2004 to 2010. He has always shown a strong pro-European vocation.
Mr. Bruton, known for his passionate support of European Integration, played a vital role in fostering Ireland’s relations with the European Union. He became one of the two Irish Parliament Representatives to the European Convention where he helped drafting the proposed European Constitution from 2001 to 2004. Moreover, he served as European Union ambassador to the United States from 2004 to 2009.
Ms. Diamantopoulou has been very active in European Affairs during, as well as after she served as Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs, and Equal Opportunities from 1999 to 2004. She is known for championing women’s issues and advocating for a stronger, more competitive Europe while stressing the importance of balancing economic efficiency with social justice.
As an international organisation open to all political, economic, social and cultural trends in civil society, the European Movement aims to contribute to the establishment of a united Europe founded on the respect for basic human rights, principles of peace and democracy, liberty and solidarity, as well as the active participation of citizens.
